World Plumbing Day Poster Competition Winners

The prizewinners in the international poster competition have been announced.

As part of its plans for World Plumbing Day 2011, the World Plumbing Council (WPC) invited industry representatives to go into their local schools to deliver a Powerpoint presentation to children under the age of 10 on the links between water, health and plumbing. As part of this presentation the children were invited to design a poster for World Plumbing Day. Local prizes were presented for the best posters which were then entered into an international competition with prizes being awarded by the WPC.

60 posters were entered from India, USA, Canada, England and Scotland. The initial judging was conducted by WPC Chairman, Robert Burgon, with the final selection being undertaken by a group of 40 individuals who were asked to rank the top posters. The names and locations of the artists were not shown to those being asked to judge the posters.

World Plumbing Day in South Australia

As Australians in times of disasters in our own backyard we can appreciate the importance of accessing clean safe drinking water and a high standard of sanitation, the World Plumbing Day committee aim is to contribute to advances in water quality and sanitation for all.

There will be a BBQ Lunch celebrating the day on Level 3 Balcony from 11.00am to 3.00 pm on Friday the 11th of March. (A donation of $5.00 gets lunch and a drink)

What is World Plumbing Day
World Plumbing Day is dedicated to helping the general public better understand the vital role the plumbing industry plays in protecting public health and safety, the extent to which it helps limit mankind’s environmental footprint and other important work performed by contractors, inspectors, installers, engineers, and manufacturers that is often taken for granted.

What is the World Plumbing Committee doing here in SA

As part of the celebrations for World Plumbing Day  the WPD Committee here in South Australia has initiated a state wide BBQ event, we have gathered support of over 30 manufacturers and agents to sponsor and attend BBQ’s at over 34 independent plumbing merchants, this is the first time in the history of plumbing in this state where everyone in the industry has united for one event and the intent is no matter where you are if you want to support the industry, anyone can attend a BBQ.

Fund Raising

As part of the BBQ events we are intending to raise funds for 2 critical projects in Third World countries that do not  have the same standard of safe drinking water or sanitation facilities as developed countries such as Australia.

These projects are;

  • Safe Clean Drinking Water

People in Bangladesh source their drinking water from wells and bores, many of which are contaminated with naturally occurring ARSNIC, up to 37 times the safe level, the World Plumbing Day Committee is assisting by raising funds to  identify contaminated wells, provide locally manufactured filtration systems and training to ensure safe clean drinking water.

  • Training and tools for the future

In East Timor TAFE SA in conjunction with the government of South Australia provides basic training to young East Timorese in the building industry, this provides basic skills and knowledge to rebuild their communities, the World Plumbing Day Committee is raising funds to provide necessary toolkits for young people who complete the specific plumbing component of the training, giving them the ability to directly assist their communities.

All in all, we need to be proud to be in this industry and not take for granted the things we have at our fingertips. Please make the effort to attend the BBQ on Friday the 11th of March and give generously.
